SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Emergency demolition began on Friday on some of the buildings damaged by a massive fire on North Salina Street in Syracuse.

Six buildings were damaged, a mix of businesses and apartments.

No one was hurt, but 14 people are being helped by the Red Cross.

The front facade was being worked on Friday to take care of the imminent danger.

The paperwork process will start next week to demolish the rest of the buildings.

As disappointing as it is to tear the buildings down, those involved said it's the safest thing to do.

"I don't take it lightly. I agree with our mayor that it does hurt the City but I have to look at the health and safety of the public and that includes the tenants and the commercial tenants as well. Unless if somebody wants to step forward and take care of them after the fact, but we have to do what we have to do immediately to take care of the safety," said Syracuse Director of Code Enforcement Ken Towsley.

The process is expected to take four to six weeks.
