CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Cortland police have made an arrest in a stabbing overnight where a man was killed.

They say the incident happened right outside of the suspect's apartment on Main Street.

Andrew Pilcher, 32, allegedly stabbed 28-year-old Damian Grant during a fight.

Grant was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Police taped off the scene early Wednesday morning, asking people living in the apartment there to stay inside until they deemed the area safe.  Around 9 a.m. residents were allowed to leave.

One of those residents was Derek Goodwin, who knew the suspect, described as a local tattoo artist.

He said, "I was very surprised. I didnt think this was something he would do at all. Very shocking."

One woman, whose son lives in the building says it was a scary scene to wake up to, but unfortunately she wasn't all that surprised by the violence.

"It's not typical for the area, but it's not becoming uncommon.  I was born and raised here. It's getting to be a thing that, ya know -- not good,” said Prudy Prior, a Cortland resident.

Police are still investigating what led up to the fight.

Pilcher is facing charges of first-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
