ILION, N.Y. -- People are sharing some images of discolored water in Ilion on the "Clean Water for Ilion N.Y." Facebook page.

Mayor Brian Lamica said the brownish water comes from well water and reservoir water colliding in the system, as well as the heat depleting reservoir water of oxygen -- leading to iron and manganese infiltrating the water.

He said the water is tested every day and is still found to be safe to drink.

Lamica took office this past July, and said Ilion has had water issues for several years, but now something really has to be done.

An aerator is expected to be installed in the coming days to help oxygenate and clear the water.

Once it's clear, the mayor hopes to shut the wells down, flush out the system, try to run on the reservoirs for the rest of the year, and then put the aeration system back into use.

But, ultimately he said the infrastructure is old and needs to be replaced.

"It's an aging infrastructure, just like the rest of the Northeast and I think every community in New York needs some help in one shape, form, or another. At this point we're doing what we can do but we're going to have to be looking for funding to move forward," said Lamica.

"It's not a very good feeling throughout the community. Some people are putting it on Facebook. They're showing their towels. They're showing their bath tubs. They're showing their sinks," said Ilion resident Lance W. Burger Sr.

The Mayor said Assemblyman Brian Miller and Senator James Seward are trying to secure grants for infrastructure work.

A public hearing will be held next month.

For now, many residents are frustrated to be paying for village water when they're drinking bottled water.
