A decision on penalty relief for North Syracuse schools could come as early as today.

Governor Cuomo is considering a bill that would forgive $20 million in penalties for the district. The District is facing the fee for improperly filing paperwork on several capital projects dating back to 1996.

However, they appealed to Senator John DeFrancisco, who drew up legislation that would forgive the debt.

Both the senate and assembly passed a bill, sending it to the governor's desk on August 7th. State law requires it to be signed within 10 days.

When asked about the situation on a conference call this morning, the governor gave a vague answer.

"I'm aware of the situation,” said Cuomo. “I've spoken to local officials. I believe it is. It has particular circumstances that would justify a particular solution. "

If the bill isn't approved, the district would be required to pay $2 million each year for the next decade.
