The city of Watertown is looking for ways to make it safer for children to get to school this year.

Some big traffic improvement projects have been in the works on Washington Street. One includes upgrading the signaling system at Thompson Boulevard to make it more pedestrian-friendly.

Updated handicap ramps, crosswalk enhancements, and rapid flash beacons are also being added. Other safety measures were already put in place after multiple car accidents involving students.

"You know we had high accident rates with the four lanes of traffic and there were some pedestrian safety concerns. So the road diet was a huge improvement," said Watertown City Engineer Justin Wood.

These projects will cost the city about $125,000. City engineers say the construction will wrap up in a few weeks.
