It's the night where police and community members team up, National Night Out Against Crime.

The event is celebrated from coast to coast and dates back to August 1984.

In Syracuse, the Police Department hosted festivities for residents.

Community members had a chance to meet with law enforcement and participate in some safety demonstrations.

Emergency responders say the goal for the night is to help bridge the gap between police and the community.

"I think when you come out in a relaxed...you know a relaxed opportunity like this, a family event where we can interact with them just as humans do as people. They can see the humanity side of us. They can see that we're all people just like they are and that we love and we care for them," said Lt. Geno Turo, Syracuse Police Department.

Officers also hope the event will encourage residents to come together and fight back against crime.

Other National Night Out events took place in Watertown, Auburn and Vestal.
