SYRACUSE, N.Y --It's an effort to ensure trains are safe for all passengers.

Officers with the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services led train security checks as part of Operation New York SECURE on Tuesday.

They were joined by other agencies including the state, Amtrak, and Syracuse police.

Officers boarded incoming trains and performed security checks along with explosive sweeps.

"I think it's great and I feel it's very important.  I feel safe," said Amtrak passenger Lynne Mooney.

"Since 9/11, a lot of things have happened all over the United States, and in my mind, they have no other choice," said Amtrak passenger Joseph Askins.

Amtrak officials said the checks also help improve coordination and communication between law enforcement agencies.
