Folks all across upstate New York have been feeling the heat, and it can cause more problems than just making you uncomfortable: it can also affect your car.

AAA representatives say during a high heat index, people tend to experience these issues with their cars:

  • Your vehicle may overheat
  • If your tire pressure is already a little low, it can cause the tire to blow out
  • The heat can also impact your car battery

AAA says there's often a misconception that the winter causes the most stress on a vehicle.

But, you should take preventative measures in the summer as well.

"One thing you would like to do or should do is have your cooling system checked. Make sure your anti-freeze is up to the level that it should be. If it does show any type of discolor, make sure you go and have your system flushed. Have all your hoses checked because they are rubber, so they can break down," said Todd Ingraham, AAA Western and Central NY fleet operations manager.

Local auto shops also say it's important to always pay attention to your temperature gauge in your cars.
