A boating club is teaching people how to have fun on the water, safely.

America's Boating Club members were on the St. Lawrence River, for a few classes. Members say water activities are a huge part of the culture and economy in New York.

Lessons include proper docking and un-docking, waterway regulations and how to navigate while boating at high speeds. The goal is to hopefully prevent future accidents.

"We've already had two fatalities on Oneida Lake of people not wearing life preservers,” said ABA Syracuse Commander Jim Ryder. “It doesn't matter whether you're in a 10 inch kayak or whether you're on a 42-foot boat. Emergencies can happen that you can end up in the water."

Boating safety courses will continue until the fall.
