New York state has launched a new effort to combat the surge in Hepatitis C.

More than 3 million people in the United States suffer from chronic Hepatitis C.

Governor Cuomo designated $5 million with plans to create a "task force."

The Hep C task force will be comprised of two committees to expand treatment and authorize Medicare reimbursement for prevention services.

For the last five years, the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS has been doing just that in communities, nationwide.

The virus disproportionately affects African-American communities and many won't realize their infected because it can be a-symptomatic.

"Now it's like an epidemic and now it needs to be address but again better late than never for the task force, especially for the funds to be able to continue to do the work and do the work on a much higher scale,” said NBLCA Program Coordinator Denise Welch.

Other organizations like ACR Health also oversee programs, aimed at ending the Hepatitis C epidemic.
