SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Friday's the day racing fans have been waiting for -- opening day at Saratoga.

People were up early and anxiously waiting to get that perfect picnic spot to watch the races from -- gates opened at 7 a.m. They were on the hunt for the perfect spot in the picnic area. Some fans said they show up early to make sure they get the same spot every year.

One of the new improvements fans can enjoy this year is The Stretch. It's an alternative to the grandstand and the picnic area. It offers a variety of seating and dining options plus other features.

"The technology of this place is nothing like anything you'll see at any other sporting venue in America.  You can order tickets, you can reserve parking.  You have food ordered and it will be delivered to your table.  Of course you can watch the races on NYRA now.  It’s now been compressed to be less than a second delay and NYRA bets a place for you to wager,” said NYRA President Chris Kay.

If this is something you're thinking of checking out, make sure to check availability on Ticketmaster.

The race horses got their early morning warm up at the Oklahoma Training Track before the big races Friday afternoon.

People from all over come out for Saratoga's opening day each year.

Racing fans are disappointed that Criple Crown winner Justify won't be running at Saratoga. Justify is nursing an injured ankle so having him race would be a risky proposition.

Kay says not having Justify there won't dampen the excitement.

"Last year we set a record attendance and record handle.  We didn't have a triple crown winner last year.  Same is true the year before.  We almost broke an attendance record and almost broke a handle record.   We didn't have a triple crown winner last year, the year before either.  I would say we have such great activities, great racing  that people come no matter what," he said.
