CHENANGO, N.Y. – Sadie the American foxhound is living a happy life with her new family in the town of Chenango.

But her journey wasn't your everyday adoption story.

Sadie went missing from a hunting club on the West Virginia border back in 2014.

For the next two-and-a-half years, she traveled all the way to the town of Maine in Broome County, where she would eventually be rescued.

It's a story that has animal experts stumped to this day.

"I've never heard of it in my life. I can't believe it. And they were able to track her down all the way from the South,” said Chris Frye, Cornell University Animal Hospital Assistant Clinical Professor.

Linda Hamilton is a dog control officer in the town of Chenango.

She first heard about Sadie when someone reported a loose dog with a coyote trap around its leg.

After months of attempts, Sadie was eventually rescued, and brought to a shelter in New Jersey.

That's when Hamilton realized she couldn't let this dog go.

"We visited with her and she was so shut down and then on the way home, I just thought, who else could take care of her as good as we could," said Linda Hamilton, Sadie's Owner.

But Sadie's road to recovery wasn't an easy one.

She had lost part of her leg trying to escape the trap.

That led her to the Cornell University Animal Hospital, where she's now been fit with a prosthetic.

"She took well to the prosthetic. The fit was good. We only had to do a little bit of fitting adjustment, and then it's about using physical therapy to encourage her to use it appropriately," said Frye.

Today, Sadie is doing better than ever.

"She's blossoming. She was totally shut down. She had never been in a house. Walking on floors, she would slip. Opening cabinets in the refrigerator scared her. Now she's a couch potato," said Hamilton.

Proving that any 'rough' life can be turned around.

Hamilton is now working to help owners locate their missing or lost animals within the town.
