A Madison County camp offers young people more than just a summer of activities -- they're learning about personal responsibility.

Kids in Cazenovia are taking care of rescued animals through the Haven at Skanda's summer camp program.

Children in need of emotional and behavioral support learn how to tend to the needs of animals that have been endangered or abused.

The two-way relationship helps build self-esteem and confidence.

"One of our goals is to feed in children a deep loving connection with animals that will inform their choices as they go through life, so that we're creating a generation of kids who care deeply about animals and take good care of them. The other very important mission is awaken in each kid their own appreciation in their individualitiy and their uniqueness," said Ellen Beckerman, Haven at Skanda Executive Director.

The Central New York Community Foundation awarded the program a $20,000 grant to expand their efforts.
