Students are getting the chance to brush up on their skills during the summer by reading to animals at the Jefferson County SPCA.

It's part of the Wags and Whiskers Reading program, which is unique to the area. Each time they read to a new fur pet, students get points to win a special gift bag.

The county's program helps promote education, while allowing kids to bond with the cats and dogs waiting for homes.

"Bridges that gap with especially summer reading because kids are at home, they're bored and they don't have anything to do so they come in and read to the animals," said Jefferson County SPCA Executive Director Heather Spezzano.

If you're interested in signing up a child, there are orientations at the SPCA on July 18th or August 15th at 6:00 p.m.
