The type of ID you need to board a plane is changing.

As part of new federal security laws, by October 1, 2020 travelers will need a REAL ID or a passport for domestic flights.

A formal announcement was made Thursday at Albany International Airport.

The DMV says it's not going to cost more than your current license.

The hope is people will get to their local DMV sooner, rather than later.

“I have family that I keep trying to get in the office. They look at me and say, ‘Hey, October 2020 is like so far away.’ It’s really not that far away and because the documents that you need, we certainly encourage people to go to the document guide, see what you need,” said Terri Egan, DMV executive deputy commissioner.

To get a REAL ID, you have to make an in person visit to the DMV.
