UTICA, N.Y. -- It's almost time for the 41st Annual Boilermaker Road Race, and security is a top priority.

"We're spending more time on security than the logistics of the race now," said Race Director Jim Stasaitis. "It's priceless. Whatever we have to pay it's priceless to make sure that it's a safe race."

Multiple law enforcement agencies will be there, and there are guidelines people need to follow.

There will be baggage transportation for runners from the start area to the finish line via the race baggage truck.

It will need to be put in a clear plastic bag.

"Spectators, don't try to bring a cooler down here. And if you don't have to bring a knapsack or something, come as light as possible," Stasaitis said.

All baggage is subject to search by law enforcement or a Boilermaker security official who will tag and deem it safe.

"Somebody asks you to stop, can we check something? Let them do it. They're trained professionals, and again they're just looking out for your safety and everybody else's," said Stasaitis.

Those behind the Boilermaker are also reminding people to be alert and aware of your surroundings, and of course, if you see something, say something.

"Common sense goes a long, long way," said Stasaitis.

Weapons and fireworks are forbidden, as well as drones and unmanned aircraft at any Boilermaker venue.
