A 75-year-old man has been reunited with his family after a long night lost in the woods in Madison County.

Leighton Bookhout was last seen near his home in Fenner just before 9 p.m. Saturday.

The sheriff's office and other agencies immediately launched an around-the-clock search effort.

More than 63 volunteers helped out.

And their efforts paid off: Bookhout was found early Sunday morning a few miles from his home, stuck knee-deep in a swamp.

"Success in these incidents depend on how many people we can get in there and get looking in the notification process. This is just the template for how you want things to go in a situation like this,” said Todd Hood, Madison County sheriff.

Bookhout was taken to the hospital for treatment. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.
