As we inch closer to Independence Day the sounds and sights of fireworks are on many people's minds. But, if you're looking to light your own, only certain types are allowed in New York.

For Onondaga County, DeWitt Police say any kinds of fireworks that can explode and cause serious physical injury are illegal.

What you can purchase at designated places around the state are certain sparklers. But, even when using those they urge you to make sure you're away from other people and make sure children have adult supervision.

Officer Brittany Mangano says even if they're legal they can still be dangerous.

"Disposing of them is something you want to be really careful about. You don't want to throw them out in a trashcan that has brush or any type of debris that could possibly ignite the fire," she said.

Mangano says the department typically receives more calls regarding fireworks this time of year, and it's something the department takes very seriously.
