Syracuse City Libraries are adding sports equipment to their collections.

As part of the Transforming Communities Initiative, children will be able to check out the items, just like books.

Trinity Health started the program, to fight childhood obesity, by giving kids access to things that encourage exercise. Employees at St Joseph's hospital have donated footballs, soccer balls, and hula hoops.

Organizers hope this new program will get kids outside and moving.

"Kids are more sedentary than they were before you know they're not up and moving or playing outside as much there’s video games, phones, and tablets so the lifestyle has changed and this is a good way to remind them that there’s so much more than looking on the computer and playing video games," said Transforming Communities Initiative Program Manager Emilija Postolovska.

The sports equipment will be available at select Syracuse city libraries beginning in July.
