NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Summer is officially here and with more children out and about, it’s an important time to remind drivers and pedestrians to be careful while crossing intersections.

The North Syracuse Police Department is doing just that, with their 4th annual "Crosswalk Crackdown."

The department is reminding drivers and pedestrians to "see and be seen."

They'll be out keeping an eye on their 13 crosswalks throughout the village, making sure drivers stop for pedestrians. The majority of them can be found on State Route 11 and Chestnut Street.

They've begun handing out fliers with warnings, at the crosswalks so people are aware of the laws. Next week they'll begin ticketing and enforcing. And it's a pretty hefty fee of $150, plus a $93 surcharge if you're caught.

Last year the department gave out as many as 10 tickets per hour at the crosswalks. They say this effort is all about keeping both pedestrians and drivers safe.

The initiative runs through July 1.
