LIVERPOOL, N.Y. — As the saying goes, "One person's trash is another person's treasure."

A group in Central New York turned some unlikely items into art Sunday.

Community members took time out of their weekend to 'upcycle,’ which is a lot like recycling, except you take used materials and make something new.

It's also a way to expand a material's life span.

Some at the Liverpool Public Library turned paint chips into art.

The main focus was to get youth and involved and learn the importance of preventing waste.

"It's important to save the environment and upcycle because if people keep throwing them away, it would make it so all these harmful things and chemicals would get in the environment. It'll kill our cute little animals," said Jeanne Fisselprand, an upcycling participant.

This isn't the first time the Liverpool Public Library has hosted this event. They find creative ways to upcycle old materials each month.
