A Centers for Disease Control report finds suicide rates have gone up dramatically across the US from 1999 to 2016.

In New York there was nearly a 29 percent increase.

The report also found nationwide about 45,000 people died as a result of suicide in 2016.

Dr. Robert Gregory who directs the Upstate University Hospital Psychiatry High Risk Program says there's also been an increase in Onondaga County.

He says it's at an "epidemic proportion" and, he says more mental health services are critical.

“We've had a huge bump in child and adolescent suicide attempts coming into University hospital. Actually ten-fold increase over the last three years,” say Dr. Robert Gregory.
