There's an area in Utica that leaders say is more dangerous than it needs to be -- so they're doing something about it. The Route 5S Safety Improvement Project continues to move forward. And as Melissa Krull tells us in the video above, drivers should expect some changes.

UTICA, N.Y. -- Drivers in Utica can expect changes as a safety improvement project moves forward along Route 5S from the Adirondack Bank Center to Broad Street.

It will be reduced from three to two-lanes in each direction, and a roundabout will be added.

The goal is to make the corridor safer for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists, and create a more inviting look.

"During the daytime, when the contractor has his other crews working, you could see lane closures but there will always be two-lanes in each direction between the peak travel hours between like six and nine," said Jim Piccola, the NYS DOT Region 2 Public Information Officer.

There will be daily lane closures eastbound and westbound from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at various locations between Broadway and Broad Street.
