The New York State Fair wants to put the trash left behind by visitors to good use.

The Fair is joining with Onondaga County and the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund to announce “Laurence Segal’s Cans For Cancer".

The project will help fund breast cancer research at Upstate Medical University through returnable cans and bottles.

Fairgoers can drop the recyclables into large pink containers.

Each person is also being asked to bring one can to be deposited.

"I believe that there's millions of dollars out there for cancer research. There's plenty of money in Syracuse for cancer research. Bottles and cans get thrown in the garbage for no reason when they can go into one of these pink garbage cans," says Laurence Segal, Cans For Cancer Founder.

During the fair three hundred volunteers will also look for recylables thrown into the garbage by mistake.
