A man who was behind the wheel in a deadly hit-and-run in Fulton nearly 50 years ago, has lost his life in an eerily similar way.

Douglas Parkhurst, 68, died on Friday night when a woman drove onto the field during a baseball game Sanford, Maine.

Parkhurst, who was accused of killing Carolee Ashby in a hit-and-run back in 1968, this time played the hero. He was struck by the car while trying to close a gate to prevent the car from fleeing.

The 4-year-old was struck and killed on the corner of 2nd and Division streets in Fulton.

For years the case went unsolved before police decided to make a post on Facebook looking for tips back in 2012. A Florida woman came forward with new information and Parkhurst was questioned. He admitted that he believed that he hit Ashby that night.

Ashby's sister Darlene was with her the day she was killed and says the family now feels they have closure.

"It's like a complete circle now, he went out the way he took my sister out. It's justice to me," said Darlene Ashby McCann, Carolee's sister.

When Parkhurst came forward no charges could be filed against him because the statute of limitations had run out.
