CAMILLUS, N.Y. — The West Genesee School District is one of a number of districts that approved security improvements as part of its budget.

District voters approved a proposition that included $2 million in safety and security upgrades last week.

Superintendent Chris Brown said work will include improving school door lock systems, visitor access monitoring and upgrading cameras.

In the wake of school shootings across the country, the upgrades can only help better ensure the safety of students.

"The focus has always been on security, and keeping people safe but when you've had the frequency of school shootings, it's just forcing the hand to make greater change more quickly," said Brown.

He says feedback was gathered from students and community members through several forums before putting a proposition on the ballot.

Safety upgrades were also approved in the Fayetteville-Manlius and Liverpool districts.
