A World War I plane is getting new life.

The Thomas Morse plane sits in a small hanger at Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport where it’s being completely restored. It’s only about one of a dozen still left. The plane known as “Tommy" was built in Ithaca in 1918.

Volunteers are even putting it together the same way it was built a century ago.

“We wanted to make it, put it back as close as we possibly could to its original configuration and that required a lot of work because there were some parts that were missing and we had to re-manufacture those parts. That was a particular challenge because some of the machines that were used to make parts for this airplane no longer exist," said Don Funke, president of Ithaca Aviation Heritage Foundation.

It’ll make one ceremonial flight in September, and then be put in a museum.
