POLAND, N.Y. -- Herkimer County third-graders got some great hands-on experience.

Poland students released about 100 brook trout into a creek behind the school.

Students had raised them in the classroom since they were just eggs back in November.

Before releasing the fish, students also collected insects and fed them to the fish on Wednesday.

The students want people to know it's a good way to learn about nature.

"The girl has the kype that kind of goes into their mouth a little bit, but not yet," said student Shyla Roberts.

"It's a great experience and that they should try it," said student Connor Cowan.

Mohawk Valley Trout Unlimited provided the trout.

The fish are native to the stream they were released into.
