The Binghamton University nursing student who was killed back in March is honored during what would have been her graduation. The father of Haley Anderson was in attendance to accept her diploma. Vince Briga spoke to her fellow students to see how she's being remembered.

VESTAL, N.Y. -- It's typically one of the happiest days of a student's life.

Binghamton University's Decker School of Nursing graduated dozens Friday afternoon.

"It means so much hard work finally coming to an end and I'm graduating with a bachelor’s in nursing and I'm really excited," said Erin Tongue, Nursing Graduate.

But during this year's ceremony, one seat was noticeably empty.

A photo of Haley Anderson, along with her cap and gown sat to remember the nursing student who was killed back in March.

She was allegedly strangled by former romantic partner Orlando Tercero in his apartment.

He then fled to Nicaragua where he was arrested by Nicaraguan Police and awaits extradition.

Haley Anderson’s father Gordon accepted her diploma to a standing ovation.

"I didn't know her all too well, but I know that I really feel for the people who were very close to her, her friends and family and it's definitely been a difficult time," said Alpha Chen, Nursing Graduate.

Haley is remembered for being dependable, thoughtful, and compassionate, qualities many say would have made her a fantastic nurse.

"She was a really positive person and she found a lot of light in places that we didn't always see it so just staying positive and bringing that hope to other people," said Janine Dewitt, Nursing Graduate.

In what would turn out to be one of the most difficult semesters these students would ever deal with, they found themselves leaning on each other for support.

"Everybody is here for everyone, and so you really feel support when you're here, and you really feel that everybody is in it together. It's one big family but it's a great team," said Tongue.

Many said they would strive to be the best nurses they could be, in Haley's memory.
