LIVERPOOL, N.Y. --The conversation continues over whether or not a beach would be a good fit for Onondaga Lake.

Republican legislators in Onondaga County recently posted a survey online to get public feedback.

51% of those surveyed said yes while 49% said no.

County Executive Joanie Mahoney has asked the legislature to consider accepting a $330,000 state grant to further study the issue.

We asked people if they would feel comfortable swimming in the water.

"Yes, I would.  Like I said, even a few times I've jumped off my board, I don't stay in too long but just based on studies that I have seen, that it is relatively safe," said Liverpool resident George Young.

"I don't know if I'd be comfortable swimming in it because of what I know from the past. I think they're whole thing depends on their water testing," said Clay resident Edward Luce Sr.

Once plagued by pollution, Honeywell and taxpayers have spent a billion dollars to help clean it up.

Onondaga County's environmental director says the water is safe for public swimming.
