UTICA, N.Y. -- A man is charged after Salvation Army employees found graffiti on their property.

Employees discovered a derogatory phrase directed at the Utica Police Department on dumpsters at the Utica Salvation Army Thrift Store earlier this week.

Employees also found graffiti on a Salvation Army truck windshield, and on the building.

After reviewing video survellance, police identified a suspect.

21-year-old Bryan Withers of Utica was charged with 3rd-degree Criminal Tampering.

A Salvation Army official said this is the first time something like this has happened at the Utica location.

Employees were able to wash most of the graffiti off.

But the official said they have issues every night with people going through donations and leaving them all over the parking lot.

Now they're considering adding security, but there are limits.

"If I have to hire security after hours, obviously it's going to eat into our bottom line and it really would not be advantageous for us to even have a store open," said Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center Business Administrator Major Robert Miga.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
