SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- If you drive down South Salina Street near West Colvin Street in Syracuse you'll notice some signs labeling the area as "The Soul District."

That designation was made a few years ago by community groups looking to revitalize the area and improve the quality of living.

Since then, some improvements have been made but there are still several vacant properties available for new businesses.

Syracuse Common Councilor At-Large Khalid Bey was involved in the name designation which he says has been positive for the area.

He says more community involvement will help.

"When we come up with ideas and watch those ideas come into fruition. And, this is the kind of thing that I think restores community camaraderie.  It restores hope in people and it helps them to understand and believe that things could be better," said Syracuse Common Councilor At Large Khalid Bey.

The signs also read "Sankofa" which is a word from the Akan language of Ghana that translates to "reach back and get it."

Anyone with ideas to improve the neighborhood is encouraged to go to the Tomorrow's Neighborhood Today meetings.

They're held on the first Monday of the month at the Southside Innovation Center at 6:00 p.m.
