CHILI, N.Y. -- The town of Chili is looking to consolidate its senior center, library and recreational facilities into one complex. It's a move that town officials say is something that they've desperately needed.

"We turn people away from our programs constantly, and we don't like that," said Town Supervisor David Dunning.

"I like to be an open, welcoming place and our center just needs more room to grow," said Mary Anne Sears the Director of the town's senior center.

Dunning says that the size and age of the buildings have made them insufficient for the community's needs.

"Our community center is actually an old school that was built in the 1930's, it needs some pretty heavy repairs," said Dunning.

In total, the anticipated cost to repair both the senior center and community center would be a little more than $3 million.

"Rather than invest $3 million in old buildings, why don't we invest $3 million in the new building and then reap the proceeds and sell these properties and hopefully get some money back through that," said Dunning.

With more than 1,400 members taking advantage of the senior center, town leaders say that their biggest concern is that the proposal gives them enough space to continue their programs.

"They want to make sure that they'll have enough room, that they'll be honored, that their needs will be met and that they'll have a place to come too, that's most important," said Sears.

The town will hold a vote on June 19 to approve a $20 million bond needed to start the construction process. Officials say that the impact on taxpayers will not be as great as they initially thought.

"An average home in Chili is about $170,000, that's $19 a year in their taxes. So that's not much, it's not a lot," said Dunning.

And with neighboring towns investing in similar facilities, Dunning says that the proposed center is about keeping residents in the Town of Chili.

"People want to stay in Chili, they want to do things in Chili, they love it here," said Dunning.

Additional meetings will be held on Thursday May 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chili Public Library.

Two other meetings will be held on May 23 from noon to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chili Community Center.
