WHITESBORO, N.Y. -- Whitesboro's new mayor gave an update on preventing flooding in the village.

He says the Sauquoit Creek Flood Plain Restoration Project is moving forward.

The plan is to have areas where overflowing water can pool, and clear out part of the creek that has filled with gravel.

The Mayor also wants to have continual maintenance done to clear out debris from storm drains, the creek, and other areas.

"You just can't let it go three or four years and then you do have a major event, and all this debris that's fallen in there, trash that's gotten in there, all comes down to Whitesboro," said Whitesboro Mayor Robert Friedlander.

"It needs to be dug out. When it gets high, it's a little nervewracking. You think it's gonna happen again," said Whitesboro Resident Beth Roach.

The Oneida County Legislature designated the County Executive to accept the grant money for restoration project, Wednesday.

The money hasn't come in yet.

The mayor added that he's hoping work gets underway this summer, and they're looking forward to starting their Farmers Market up again on June 4.
