The warm weather usually indicates construction time.

Although Syracuse has seen work all year long on Interstate 690, it's expected to pick up momentum in the coming weeks.

Westbound lanes on I-690 are still closed. This includes both the on and off ramps at Teall Avenue.

These lanes are expected to open up by the end of the month. That's when crews will switch construction to the eastbound lanes.

Workers did come across a few unexpected hiccups as they worked on the project.

"Probably the single largest challenge on this project was the poor soils,” said NYSDOT Regional Director David Smith. “We've dealt with that by a mechanism called controlled module columns to stabilize the soil and be able to build on it, so it makes a good foundation."

Construction on 690's eastbound lanes is expected to be completed by the end of the construction season.
