HERKIMER, N.Y. -- Senator Charles Schumer is jumping onboard the efforts to get NASA artifacts to Herkimer County.

Last fall, thousands of students signed a massive banner that was presented at the Gregory B. Jarvis Middle School in Mohawk. They want artifacts related to Gregory Jarvis, who was an astronaut from the area who died aboard the "Challenger" which exploded shortly after launching.

The effort was led by Herkimer County Legislator John Brezinski.

Now, Senator Charles Schumer is joining in, and wrote to the Johnson Space Center Director. He's requesting NASA helps in the planning and establishment of a memorial.

"This is a huge thing for us, not for me, but for the young people. That's what I'm all about and that's what I've been about for 40 years," Brezinski said.

If they get any artifacts, they'll be displayed in the Herkimer County Office Building.
