Students at Syracuse University are still looking for answers in the wake of a scandal involving the Theta Tau fraternity.

A video surfaced Wednesday containing racist, homophobic and sexist content. The fraternity was suspended in response.

Chancellor Kent Syverud gave remarks at a rededication ceremony for the Shaw Quad on campus Thursday.

While he did not take questions about the video or the fraternity's status, he used his remarks to emphasize that the university community is in need of kindness and compassion.

"We are a university filled with good people who have worked very hard at diversity and inclusion for many years, and at creating a frank and civil environment,” said Syverud. “And yet we have to face squarely that we have much work remaining to do."

The Grand Regent of Theta Tau at the national level responded to the video, saying the content is disrespectful and violates the organizations values.

He says an investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken.
