Upstate University Hospital wants to continue to 'clear the air.' Since 2005, tobacco use has been prohibited anywhere on campus and that also includes electronic cigarettes.

Visiting the hospital can be a stressful time and people might have the urge to smoke. As a way to help, the hospital will offer free nicotine replacement therapy to anyone who visits the campus beginning April 20th.

You can request a comfort kit, which will include two 4-milligram nicotine replacement lozenges plus information on where to get help to quit smoking. The kits are available 24-hours a day for anyone 18 years old and older.

"We don't want our patients and their families walking from the Cancer Center over to our other 550 at Harrison or walking from the Cancer Center to our psychiatric clinic in clouds of smoke. Second hand smoke has a lot of harm and causes disease as well," said Theresa Hankin, Upstate Cancer Center Registered Respiratory Therapist.

This is a pilot program and after 90 days the hospital will evaluate how it's working. The initiative costs approximately $2,500.
