Day one of standardized testing in New York is set to begin Wednesday.

It remains a controversial topic across the state, with a stagnant percentage of parents opting out of the exams.

However Lafargeville School District officials say the question isn't whether or not these exams should exist, but how the students can benefit from them.

"We use the data to basically determine whether we're teaching the right material and more importantly whether our students are learning those materials and whether or not they're getting it,” said Lafargeville School District Superintendent Travis Hoover. “The data then drives our instruction."

Third through fifth grade ELA exams will finish on Thursday, while the math portion beginning May 1.
