SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A man has been charged after a 1-year-old died from injuries and three others were left in critical condition after an intentionally set fire at 253 Fitch Street Thursday morning.

Charles A. DuBois, 20, has been charged with second-degree murder and first-degree arson. He will be arraigned at 9:30 a.m on Friday and is currently being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

Firefighters arrived on Fitch Street at 3:15 a.m. The house was already fully engulfed in flames. They used their ladders to get up to the second floor, and started searching for victims from there.

Susan Wagner, 45; Michael DuBois, 16; Korinna DuBois, 18; and 1-year-old Hunter DuBois were all pulled from the burning home. Hunter DuBois later died from the injuries.

James Gower, 51, was able to escape the home by exiting a second floor window.

Two firefighters were also hurt inside at the scene.

Between the extreme conditions inside, and the weather outside, it was a difficult task for the Syracuse Fire Department.

"When they arrived the fire was very heavy on the first floor, it was extended to the second floor. We weren't sure exactly where the victims were located at.  These guys and females made an aggressive push to get into the building, there were holes in the floors; the stairs to the second floor were burnt out when we arrived. So they did a phenomenal job getting to the victims and removing them in a timely manner,” said Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds.

The investigation is still ongoing. Anybody with additional tips is asked to contact the Syracuse Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222.
