NORWICH, N.Y. -- The "Department of Environmental Conversation" found hazardous chemicals at the 3-acre site along the Lee Avenue railroad in 2012.

The soil, soil vapor and groundwater were affected. The DEC says the pollution came from the former Hercules Inc. plant dumping waste.

The site's project manager says they already removed the contaminated soil and are currently working on the groundwater. He's advising residents in the area to be proactive.

"If they have the opportunity to have their home tested, [they] should take that opportunity because there are very easy ways to mitigate any potential exposure to soil vapor intrusion," said Gary Priscott, the Lee Avenue Railroad site project manager.

The project manager says the groundwater cleanup should be completed by the end of the summer.
