COHOES, N.Y. -- One state lawmaker is pushing for local governments to take a look at sharing services, after two Coeymans police officers killed a rabid raccoon by using their patrol vehicles to run it over.

Assemblyman John McDonald says the incident could have been handled better. He says each municipality doesn't necessarily have to have its own animal control officer, and shared services with other agencies can make for a faster response to similar incidents.

"But to work and respond in an appropriate time. Four hours they had. They could have called a neighboring agency. It was unfortunate they didn't do it, but this an opportunity to take a look at doing things a little differently,” he said.

An investigation into how the officers handled the incident is underway.
