So, what role does social media play in all of the recent threats? For some, that's where some of the threats originated.

Makana Chock is an Associate Professor in Media Psychology at Syracuse University. She said major events are usually followed by an increase in threats online.

Chock said social media makes those threats worse, because people tend to send out false information.

"Anytime rumors start they tend to expand, they tend to feed on themselves and get distributed and heightened," said Chock. "The fear is real. I mean the students at the school who may hear of the threat are obviously deeply concerned and they don't know that people are already evaluating, accessing or checking on this."

Utica Police also addressed social media in a press conference about the threat. Students online were saying others were injured and that possible shots were fired on campus.

Officers said that information is false.
