Think Central New York is getting hit with a “late” winter storm? Well, according to National Weather Service records, history says otherwise.

Many in the area remember last year’s snow storm that dumped a whopping 24.4 inches in the Syracuse area and even more in some parts north and east. A total of 18.9 inches of snow fell on March 14, 2017 and then another 5.5 inches on March 15.

But 2017’s storm was nothing compared to the Blizzard of ’93.

The year 1993 brought the most snow the area has seen on record for March. A total of 41.2 inches descended on Syracuse in a matter of days -- 22.1 inches on March 13, 1993, and on the next day the area was hit with an additional 19.1 inches of snow.

Spectrum News Director of Meteorology Michael Gouldrick describes it as the CNY superstorm -- and rightly so -- being that nearly 3 ½ feet of snow fell in two days.

While the area hasn’t gotten a late “hit” similarly throughout recorded history, there have been plenty of “spring” snowfalls.

Syracuse doesn’t have to look too far in the past to find late winter, early spring storms. Back in 1971, March 4 was pounded with a nice 13.8 inches, and March of 2001 brought in more than a foot on March 2. The March 31 record was in 1974 -- where the area got 9.3 inches.

In 2013, April 2 saw 10.5 inches of snow -- making it the highest snowfall amount the month has seen on record. That doesn’t mean we haven’t gotten snow all throughout April though -- 2007 and even 2004 received record snowfall days as well.

And for those of you thinking May is too warm for snow -- you don’t know Central New York. Who can forget the Mother’s Day storm of 1996? On May 12, 1996 all of the mother’s across the region were blessed with the ever-bountiful gift of snow. While only 2.1 inches fell -- it was significant for mid-May.

Fun fact -- the area has never seen snow in June –- on record anyhow. Although back in 2013, there was a trace of snow on May 31.

Please note this data comes from the National Weather Service’s daily record. In 1950, the NWS service station moved from downtown Syracuse to Hancock International Airport.
