MARCY, N.Y. -- Local students are joining in national efforts of advocating for safer schools.

A walkout was held at Whitesboro High School on Tuesday but it had to be kept indoors.

School officials said it was a precaution after law enforcement strongly recommended students stay indoors.

It was held in the high school auditorium. The walkout's organizer said about 100 students took part.

She and some of her group came outside after school let out.

While other students were respectful, there were some who did not stand with the movement.

Students were thankful to have the opportunity to share their message.

"It's time for change," student Lauren Porter. "It's time for peace. Children need to stop dying because of guns and because of violence -- in schools of all places."

"There are arguments on either side that are very valid, but I think the real important thing here is we stand in solidarity with those victims," said student Austin Goldsmith-Lachut.

The school district released a statement saying they recognize and support their students' right to freedom of speech, but the district is prohibited from engaging in or endorsing political activities.

Students are also pushing for more armed guards, metal detectors, and bulletproof windows at the high school.
