As the fluctuation between freezing cold and warmer weather continues in the Capital Region, officials are turning their attention to the dangers that can be created by ice jams.

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara took time to address some of those concerns, specifically about ice jams and flooding in Schenectady.

Some residents had to evacuate their homes earlier this week when ice jams, warm weather and rain led to flooding in part of the Stockade District.

Santabarbara said part of the issue may be certain structures built on the Mohawk River.

"In this case, the railroad bridge in Schenectady near the train station is where all the ice is accumulating,” said Santabarbara. “Those structures are actually blocking the ice from coming through. The other side is actually pretty clear. So maybe when we look at this, we may have to re-design that old railroad bridge to make sure ice can get through when it can't right now.

Santabarbara said ice jams are particularly problematic in New York with 25 percent of all ice jams in the country happening here in the state.
