ONONDAGA, N.Y. -- Anthony Saccone, a 30-year-old from Camillus, was released Friday night on $100,000 bail.
Three young adults were killed in a town of Onondaga crash police say was caused by a drunk driver Friday morning. On Friday night the families and friends of the victims watched as the man accused of driving drunk was arraigned.
Saccone was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, and DWI, and was arraigned Friday.
State police said two of the three people killed in the crash were students at Onondaga Community College, the third was enrolled as recently as last semester.
The crash happened at the intersection of Onondaga Boulevard and Onondaga Road in the town of Onondaga.
State police said the crash happened around 3:40 a.m. and that 19-year-old Baylie Rose, 18-year-old Michael Walker, and 20-year-old Samara Osmanovic were killed. They were all traveling in the same vehicle.
Osmanovic's father said she was wheel-chair bound with no arms or legs. A source tells us that her mother died recently. Osmanovic and Rose were friends from OCC, according to Osmanovic's father.
"We arrived within three or four minutes to find two vehicles involved in a collision here at this intersection. In one of the vehicles, three people are deceased now," said New York State Police Captain Jeffrey Raub.
Police said Rose and Osmanovic had just picked up Walker from work at FedEx. Rose and Walker (passenger) were in a relationship, and were then en route to drop Osmanovic (rear passenger) back to campus. She was an OCC student from Bosnia.
Rose was driving, and alcohol has been ruled out from their vehicle.
Police said it appears Saccone ran a red light and following the crash he fled on foot. They were able to track his location to his home from the scene with K-9s and witness interviews, however.
"We were able to track him using our K9 to his door, where he eventually was taken into custody, questioned and subsequently arrested," said New York State Police Public Information Officer Jack Keller.
He was found with only minor injuries.
Authorities said they did not administer field sobriety tests or a breathalyzer at the scene, but it was evident that Saccone was under the influence of alcohol. They have since gotten a blood sample to determine his BAC.
Keller said that although they are still early on in the investigation, there is evidence from streaks in the road that Saccone's vehicle, a GMC Arcadia, hit the driver's side of the other car, a Chevrolet Impala. It appears it then rolled over and forced the vehicle into the corner of the roadway. He also says that after impact Saccone's SUV caught fire.
The speed limit on the road is 35 mph.
State police are calling the crash a senseless tragedy.
"Unfortunately, you have a vehicle and we don't have a speed at this point. It doesn't appear it was going the speed limit. And for whatever reason you have a tragedy here of the three young lives that were taken," said Keller.
The investigation is ongoing, and pending toxicology results Saccone could be facing additional charges.
Friends and family of Rose says the family is seeking time and space to grieve.
