ROME, N.Y. -- Rome leaders continue working on plans for $10 million they're receiving from the state.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced last September the city won money to redevelop its downtown. The mayor said the planning committee voted Tuesday to expand the downtown footprint for a light industrial manufacturing facility's expansion. That will help retain 40 jobs and create 15 more.
Other plans include constructing a skating rink at City Hall, renovating the Capitol Theatre and demolishing the Liberty-George Parking Garage. Officials hope to turn that site into surface parking and use the space for an apartment complex.
"There are other apartment complexes in that area, and I think it would be a nice idea to put something like, for lack of a better term, a convenience mart," said resident Lisa Pritchard.
"I can't believe what we've accomplished in just a little over two years of being in office," said Rome Mayor Jacqueline Izzo. "We're just starting the third year, and we've got a lot of projects. A lot of things are going to be happening here now for the next few years."
A public information session is scheduled for March 22 at 6 p.m. at the REACH Center.
