OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Oswego city leaders are looking to hold property owners more accountable.

Two proposals that will force people to take better care of their property are currently being reviewed.

One deals with snow and ice removal from city sidewalks, the other increases fines when their property is not maintained.

Additional charges will be added if the city has to step in and clean or clear a property.

The mayor says it's an effort to improve Oswego and keep residents safe.

"It's one thing to make a mistake or to be busy for a day or two and not be able to get to it. When three, four, five days go by, and you cannot remedy the situation, and school children and our elderly and our disabled are walking in the streets, that's a problem and that needs to stop,” said Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow.

Next week lawmakers will vote to hold a public meeting on the issue.
