Congresswoman Claudia Tenney is responding to the school shooting in Florida.

She said she is sending her thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families, as well as the school district.

17 people were killed.

She described preventing future shooting situations as an issue that's a "bigger problem than gun control".

The Congresswoman said there needs to be more of a focus on addressing mental illness issues.

"We cannot legislatively stop people from being violent. I mean unfortunately, that's the nature of human beings, and sadly it's an unfortunate thing but I do think that there are steps that we could take to make us more safe and more secure. I think just banning guns is not gonna stop it," Tenney said.

Tenney also supports the National Instant Criminal Background Check system for people buying guns, and would like to see more security in schools.
